Tacti-cool: USSV Rhino GX

The first time you get a look at the US Specialty Vehicles’ (USSV) Rhino GX rolling down the road,  your first thought is Military/Law enforcement vehicle. The Rhino GX is an armored urban assault vehicle that would easily put an individual or group of friends in the role of playing a Special Forces team smashing through roadblocks and barricades to get to a target. Although we don’t recommend playing commando and smashing through anything with this vehicle, the Rhino GX definitely seems to be purpose built for that sort of work.

Although the Rhino GX looks like the younger brother of the M1A2 , according to reports, it does not handle or ride like a tank. The ride and handling are to any modern, large SUV.
USSV achieves this handling and ride quality by utilizing a Ford F-450 chassis and enhancing the front suspension with an oversized sway bar and performance shocks. The ride is further improved by using Liquid Spring Technologies’ Compressible Liquid Adaptive Suspension System (CLASS) in place of the conventional rear-suspension setup. The CLASS suspension continuously adjusts to different road and driver inputs making this Behemoth handle like a luxury SUV. Whatever driving conditions are or whatever the vehicle’s load, the suspension stays manageable, level and planted. CLASS also allows the driver to change between three ride settings (Sport, Normal, and Luxury) at the touch of a button.

Test drives have shown that the Rhino GX’s excellent driving characteristics and the power of the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel make for a very versatile vehicle. Maintaining freeway speeds is not a problem with six-speed TorqueShift automatic transmission coupled with the Power Stroke. Off-road endeavors are not an issue as the motor has plenty of “grunt” to handle even the roughest terrain.
According to test drivers braking is also surprisingly comfortable. USSV retained the factory F-450 braking system equiped the vehicle with 38-inch Toyo tires, These two features make stopping the Rhino GX easy and SUV like.
The Premium model Rhino GX interior is very comfortable and boasts good visibility. The driver seat is six-way power adjustable, however the front passenger seat is not powered and far less adjustable. The two rear seats have eight-way power adjustability and a center console that houses the rear A/C controls, cupholders, and electronic ports. The Premium Rhino GX also includes two sunroofs toward the rear of the vehicle. Instrumentation is very organized with all the controls easily accessible.  The App-Tronics SmartNav system makes finding coordinates a breeze.

The exterior is all business. Sadly, the sharp-angled steel body looks armored and bulletproof, however it is not. But, just like anything in life… it can be, for the right price. The cab is steel and composite body panels assembled around a dual-layer, cold-steel body structure. There is no flex or give in the body giving the Rhino GX a very quiet ride.

USSV has succeeded at building  a very rugged, stout, high-end SUV for people who are looking for the feel of a limo with the appearance of a Marine Corps Assault Vehicle.
